These twin boys--only 40 days old--are two of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees fleeing from ethnic violence in Myanmar and trying to find safety in Bangladesh. The situation is especially dire for women and children, who comprise almost 80% of the displaced Rohingya population. Limited food, shelter, and medicine directly restrict mothers’ abilities to care for their young babies, who are at the greatest risk of death. Sadly, one of the infant boys pictured above died just minutes before, when his family’s boat capsized a few feet from the Bangladeshi shore. Take time to consider whether or not this image would send a different message if the frame included the grief-stricken faces of the two women, and how this represents the power of visual media to shape public opinion. What is the impact of focusing the lens on the bodies, and how does that affect our interpretation of their suffering?
